Kopke releases limited edition Very Old Dry White Port

Updated: Oct 18, 2019

Kopke, the oldest Port Wine House, is releasing an iconic Port, Kopke Very Old Dry White. This exclusive white port is a blend of very old and rare wines from the last century which have been aged in 300-litre casks and production is limited to 350 bottles.

Cask-aged for at least 50 years, this Kopke Very Old Dry White has intense and complex aromas of spice, dried fruit, yellow stone fruits and delicate notes of citrus. It is vibrant yellow in colour, has a concentrated, rich and velvety mouthfeel, yet is slightly dry on the palate, rounding off with an incredible, delicate finish.

“We are so fortunate here at Kopke to be custodians of these very old and rare wines and we feel we have a duty to safeguard this legacy for future generations. We also wanted to celebrate our history by creating this Very Old Dry White”, says Carlos Alves, Sogevinus Fine Wines' Port winemaker and Master Blender.

Carlos Alves adds “although delicate, this Port is quite versatile and is the perfect match for either a fine almond tart, or an apple crumble, or even paired with a blue cheese, foie-gras, scallop gratin or prawn tempura.”

Kopke, founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke, was established long before the Douro was even recognised as a Demarcated Wine Region. Today, Kopke is world-renowned for its old Colheitas and its unique collection of old white ports, receiving many awards across the globe.

The Quinta where Kopke´s wines are produced is called São Luiz, and is situated in the Douro Valley, on the left bank of its river. Widely known for its 125 hectares, of which 90ha are planted with vines, many of them very old.

With the launch of this Very Old Dry White Port, and last year’s release of the ‘Kopke CNK 380 Port’, a blend of tawny Ports from the 1920s, 1930s and Colheita 1900, Kopke continues to showcase the expertise of generations of people who have worked at the company, highlighting the care, dedication and passion of this long-standing Port house.
