Champagne Billecart-Salmon releases Vintage 2008

Updated: Oct 18, 2019

Champagne Billecart-Salmon has released its Vintage 2008. A blend of Pinot Noir from the Montagne des Reims and Grande Vallée de la Marne and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, the wine has spent nine years aging in the House’s cellars in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. With a delicious fruit intensity and lemony citrus characters and nuts on the nose, it offers white fruits on the palate and a persistent finish with a signature House structure that has the potential to be even greater with further ageing.

Florent Nys, Chef de Cave for Billecart-Salmon says of this vintage, “2008 was an exceptional harvest, producing Champagnes that will age beautifully and for a long time. Here at Billecart-Salmon, our 2008 showcases the Pinot Noir, giving the Champagne an intensity that is tempered by the elegance of the Chardonnay.”

Family-owned since it was founded 200 years ago, Billecart-Salmon has the luxury of patience, and as such only releases their cuvées when the family tasting panel believe the wines are ready to be enjoyed. As well as the Billecart-Salmon Vintage 2008, this month also sees the release of the next vintage of the much-anticipated Le Clos Saint-Hilaire 2002. This exceptional champagne, made from 100% Pinot Noir, is only made in the very best years and this vintage has been aged for 15 years before release. This extremely rare and complex champagne is vinified in oak casks, with minimal dosage, allowing the richness of the terroir and the purity of the fruit to express itself.

This one-hectare walled vineyard meets the strictest guidelines, being a single, enclosed parcel with complete winemaking facilities on site. The vines and soil are carefully tended with the utmost respect for the environment. As a testament to this commitment, several years ago the Billecart-Salmon family returned to ancestral champagne-making methods in the Clos by using workhorses to work the land.
