Jeroboams announces new appointment – Alex Turnbull

Jeroboams, London’s Local Wine Merchant, has appointed Alex Turnbull to the position of Private Sales Manager with effect from 4th January 2021. This a newly created role for the wine merchant where private sales have increased by 12% year on year.

Turnbull joins the business from a senior sales role at Justerini & Brooks and prior to that he worked for, then managed, the Edinburgh branch of WoodWinters Wines and Whiskies.


Jeroboams CEO Matt Tipping notes, “Alex will be joining Jeroboams at a really exciting time in our business. Despite the challenges and pressure of 2020, our company has seen strong sales growth in our shops, through our new website and particularly in our Private Client business. The relationships our team has fostered over the year have strengthened and grown, with many of our regular shoppers converting into the personalised service that we offer including advice on particular wines and spirits, En Primeur offers, storage and investment. Alex’s six years’ experience in a similar role will ensure that this department is best-placed to continue growing with the increased demand.”

Their portfolio is diverse and exciting and their reputation as one of the finest merchants in London is undisputed. I can’t wait to work with the team to enhance the Jeroboams Private Client service and offering, ensuring continued growth in such a key part of the Jeroboams business.”


“Alex has a thorough understanding of the fine wine market, with exceptional knowledge of Burgundy, Bordeaux and Germany and his appointment adds further depth to our team,” adds Tipping. “His knowledge and experience of selling ultra-premium whisky bottlings is an area that is increasingly important within our portfolio. Alex will be leading the 5-strong team that includes Xavier Hornblow, David Standfield, Luke Cianfarani and Henry Chambers.” Turnbull holds the WSET Diploma and is also a freeman of the City of London with The Worshipful Company of Vintners.



Following on from the national lockdown news on the 4th of January, Jeroboams confirms that in line with government guidelines they will continue to trade through lockdown (with minor changes to opening hours to ensure that teams can work safely within one location). The Jeroboams website continues to accept orders with the recently launched 2019 Burgundy campaign currently available via the website for the first time.

  • In 2018, Jeroboams Trade became the new name for the distribution arm of the Jeroboams Group. Formerly Laytons Wine Merchants, Jeroboams Trade is a wholesale business providing on-trade and corporate customers their portfolio of fine wines and spirits. Laytons Wine Merchants will continue, but only as an importing agency.

  • 2018 – Jeroboams received the Drinks Retailing Award for Small Chain of the Year with the judges citing “2017 was a year of reinvention for Jeroboams, which refurbished all six stores to stunning effect.
